Anime: The Promised Neverland by Kaiu Shirai (Season 1)

This anime is absolutely phenomenal! I had watched this anime sometime last year, after AnimeNEXT 2019, an anime expo that happens in Atlantic City, New Jersey annually. At the time, I didn't know the anime had released for this series, I was only reading the manga. When I had gotten to the convention and saw all the cosplayers dressed as the characters from The Promised Neverland by Shirai Kaiu, I knew at that moment, as soon as I got home from AnimeNext, I would binge through the whole season in like two days.

Which, evidently, I did. I had watched through the whole season and checked it off of my completion list for anime and manga, but this was all before I had started this blog. I have now rewatched the whole season in preparation for season two, which will be releasing January 2021, only in a few months, 'casue as of right now it is November! I am very excited for the second season to release, especially since I enjoyed the manga very much.

Anyways, this season covers the whole Grace Field House arc, depicting their time at the orphanage and what happens when Emma and Norman find out the true purpose of the house of which they live. For those who have not read the manga yet, I highly recommend it, it is amazing!

The main characters, Norman, Emma, and Ray, all live in an orphanage called the Grace Field House with thirty or more kids and their caretaker, Mama Isabella. The main three are pictured below, respectively:

They find out something detrimental about the house that they live in and must find a way to escape from there with all their siblings, and away from Mama...

(SPOILER WARNING! START)

Basically if you read my manga review of this series, that literally covers what happens in this first season. This season starts off with an introduction of the main three kids: Emma, Ray, and Norman, also showcasing their happy, peaceful lives at the Grace Field House, an orphanage for kids. We then see one of the kids, Conny, get ready to leave the house, for she is getting adopted by a foster family. Unfortunately, her Little Bunny that she always carts around with her, she forgets to grab it, so Emma and Norman make it their job to give it to her at the gate before Conny is shipped off, despite it being against the rules. The rules being to stay away from the gate and the fence in the forest.

They get to the gate but don't find Conny, except finding a truck, first time they've seen one, and no one else there in the tunnel of the gate. They look around for a bit, and Emma looks in the back of the truck, the sight horrifying her.

She finds Conny dead! Soon they hear voices coming towards them and hide beneath the truck with Little Bunny in tow. Eavesdropping, they see and hear giant demons talking about the shipment and they soon see Mama there, too, except she isn't the Mama that they grew up with. This one being cold and calculating, not caring that one of her children was dead to be eaten.

Soon enough, the demons think someone is there, checking under the truck... but finding no one but Little Bunny! Little Bunny is handed over to Mama Isabella and she is now suspicious of the children in the house. Norman and Emma escaped, trying to wrap their heads around everything they discovered, like how they are just livestock, raised in a farm as free-range food for the demons. They decide to try and act normally, to not let on that they know the truth about the house.

Emma is completely distraught over the fact that Conny was dead and starts to think about everyone else that had been "adopted." What happened to them after they left the house and such. It becomes difficult for Emma to disguise her thoughts and such, almost being caught by Mama once. Eventually, Ray corners the two of them, having known they were going out to the gate, and asks what happened. They tell him the truth and now he is in on things as well.

The main focal point of the first season/arc is to escape the farm. Emma wants to bring all the other kids along and while Ray thinks it's too risky, Norman sides with her. I get a lot of "Norman is in love with Emma" vibes from this point on. They start training with the rest of the kids, disguising it as playing tag, to get them ready for the escape. Soon, a second adult is in the picture: Sister Krone.

Honestly, I find her really creepy, not as creepy as she is in the manga series, but almost as much. She is the only other adult the kids have seen other than Mama. Krone aspires to be a Mama and tries to bring the downfall of Isabella while Isabella is keeping the kids under control, knowing that some one knows the truth of the house. The rest of the season becomes a series of cat and mouse chases, trying not to get caught while testing others. Eventually, the trio are able to bring Don and Gilda into the loop, Don's reaction not being so friendly due to being lied to originally...

Anyways, they are allowed to know the truth about the demons and the farm, soon having a bigger role in the escape plan. Things soon turn awry as Sister Krone is "sent away" and Norman is the next to be shipped out...

(SPOILER WARNING! END)

I will be leaving things there, I won't be giving away the ending because it is so satisfying and gratifying to watch. With season two coming soon, I am very excited and will try to post a review as soon as the season comes to a close. I first must find out whether or not Crunchyroll will be simulcasting the season.

Anyways, I highly recommend this series with a passion! The manga series was astounding and watching it come to life is absolutely amazing! The anime was really well done, and there were some nuances that I didn't notice the first time watching and honestly they are just brilliant! But definitely watch season one if you haven't yet, I can almost guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Hope to have you all come back for next week's review! Stay safe and mask up!
