We have finally made it to season three of The Good Place! Yay! This is where things start getting, kind of, really intense. The four humans are alive and well on Earth now, including Michael and Janet. Yes, those two also made their way down to Earth, after The Judge found out that Michael had gone down more than the initial one time to save the humans' lives, continuing his interference. Anyways, the four are back on Earth and it has been about a year since they almost died.
The four of them had improved, Jason maybe, in the first several months after their near death experiences, but soon enough they had all fallen back into their old ways. Bad habits are hard to break after all. Then Michael had approached Eleanor, posing as a bartender and they had a heart-to-heart, with Michael saying, "what we owe to each other," somewhere in the conversation. Eleanor ends up Googling that phrase, taking her to Chidi's recorded lecture discussing the topic. Next thing you know, she's sold everything, packed up her bags, and moved to Australia to meet Chidi to try and help her become a better person.
With this set off a series of events, bringing the whole team together, minus Michael and Janet, who just touched down on Earth permanently after being caught by The Judge. Now, we are going to get into the nitty-gritty of things...
(SPOILER WARNING! START)
Eleanor lands in Australia, seeks out Chidi, and helps Chidi land the girl, in this case, Simone, a neurological professor who works at the same university as Chidi, all without knowing of her and Chidi's relationship in the previous afterlife. Wow, that is a mouthful. Anyways, after explaining her near death experience, it causes the two nerdy geniuses to set forth and venture out, creating a philosophical and neurological joint case study of people who had near death experiences within the last year. In which case brought Jason and Tahani to Australia.
Michael and Janet end up observing them from the newspaper's club room, that no one goes into anymore. Janet had previously bugged the room in which the study was to take place. The two of them do whatever it takes to keep the study going and keep the four of them together, even going to the lengths of getting rid of Trevor, a demon who appeared in the first season to take Eleanor "away" to The Bad Place.
The study comes to a close and Michael and Janet are exposed to the four of them, with them explaining the entire afterlife system, therein breaking Chidi.
Now the whole gang is together and they call themselves the "Soul Squad" since now they know about the afterlife, they can't earn anymore points. They seek out people in their lives to help them onto the right path and getting them into The Good Place. As this happens, Michael reveals to Eleanor about her relationship to Chidi in the previous afterlife he had designed and Eleanor goes into denial but then realizes that she might actually have feelings for Chidi now.
After the group finishes "Soul Squad" missions, they go to Doug Forcett, the only human that actually discovered how the point system for the afterlife worked, despite being high as a kite when he did. Michael and Janet find out that Doug is a "happiness pump" and therefore a lost cause. They head back to where they dropped off the four humans, they didn't take them to see Doug, only to find out Shawn and his demons created their own portal to Earth. Janet fights them off and takes the humans into her Void, essentially killing them.
Michael eventually discovers that no one, not a single human, has gotten into The Good Place in over 500 years. He finds out that the point system is really screwy and the group break into The Good Place to try and bring it up with them to fix it.
Unfortunately, The Good Place committee is full of pansies who don't find the matter pressing enough and to try and fix anything immediately, they wanted to take 1000 years just to form the investigation team! Like, come on! Chidi and Eleanor discover their feelings for each other again, Tahani and Jason had gotten legally married while they were back on Earth so she could give him her money, but then find out that Janet has feelings for Jason while they were in her Void, so things were awkward between the three of them for a bit.
Michael takes up the point system dilemma up with Judge Gen, short for Hydrogen, and states his case, the acts of goodness that was done in the past don't have the same point value as present day because of how complicated and convoluted humanity has become. She, in turn, is annoyed because of this, and goes to Earth herself to find out that he was right.
(SPOILER WARNING! END)
This season had me really emotional, especially the ending of it. Chidi and Eleanor are my favourite couple on the show, like so many others. Many people love Jason and Janet as couple, which I do as well, but not as much as Chidi and Eleanor.
To really sum up this season, it was a bridge. Seasons two and three by themselves aren't astounding, but they make really good bridges to help continue the story. I wasn't too thrilled about the whole time montage when they were back on Earth, it made it seem that the whole bit of them being alive again was just not of great importance. The ending of the season was amazing though, so it was made up for.
Now if you thought this season was emotional, tighten up your tear valves because the next season is the final season. The last one! The finale! I liked the season, not my favourite, but it was good. I am not going to lie, the first and last seasons of this show are probably the best, personal opinion. But the stories told in seasons two and three were nice fillers.
Hope you all enjoyed this week's post! Next week I am going to be ranting about the final season of The Good Place! My gods do the years fly by so fast! I hope that you all will be back for next week's ramblings! Thank you all very much for reading and being a continued supporter of this blog! Please join me again next week for the conclusion!
