K-Drama: Possessed

Possessed (TV series) - Wikipedia

I have decided on branching out a bit beyond just talking about anime and manga and talk about some other things I have been watching since this pandemic started. So... I have started to delve into the K-Dramas that are available on Netflix! This is not my first time watching K-Dramas but it is the first time I get to talk about the ones I have seen, solely due to the fact that I don't have many friends that enjoy K-Dramas as much as I do.

Moving right along, this Korean drama centers around Kang Pil-Seong, a detective in the Violent Crimes unit at the Sangdong Police Station and Hong Seo-jeong, an online clothing store owner and extremely powerful psychic. These two meet and their fates become entwined with one another, especially after Hwang Dae-du, a serial killer that had been executed over twenty years ago, is resurrected and starts killing again...

(SPOILER WARNING! START)

Possessed starts itself off in the '90s where Hwang Dae-du has a woman all tied up, ready for the slaughter. In comes Detective Kim Nak-cheon, the detective in charge of the task of Hwang Dae-du's capture. Soon it is revealed that the woman is actually a police officer who was being used as bait so that they could finally get the drop on Hwang Dae-du. Detective Kim promises that he will get the woman out safely and alive, but that promise is in vain when Hwang Dae-du starts to butcher her with a hatchet in his hands. Detective Kim loses it and shoots Hwang Dae-du, picking up the fallen hatchet, almost killing Hwang Dae-du himself, and I think he would have too if the reinforcements didn't show up as they did. Then, we are shown Hwang Dae-du's execution...

We are then thrown into the modern day and shown former Detective Kim having a little too much to drink, leaving the restaurant he was at and walking home. In the middle of the dark street is where is he met with a stranger, all clad in black, whistling the tune of "Silent Night," just as Hwang Dae-du used to when he was prowling around for his next prey. Soon, the man attacks Detective Kim and kills him...

Now, I am going to try and condense everything, a lot of events happen and the episodes are one hour long EACH, meaning I spent 16 hours watching this series. So yeah, I am not going to touch upon every single little thing, this would be a extremely detailed review if I talked about everything that happened in those 16 hours.

So, Detective Kang Pil-seong is catching a criminal and needs a little assistance, Hong Seo-jeong is walking down the street when he calls out to her to wack the guy he was holding down. She picks up a mop from a trash pile nearby and is extremely confused with no idea who to hit, so she wacks Pil-seong. The rest of the guys from the Violent Crimes unit finally catches up with Pil-seong, they were all staking out in different locations to try and catch the guy, and watch this all go down. Once they see that she wacks Pil-seong they finally move to arrest the other guy while some help Pil-seong up. All this is happening while Seo-jeong is looking on, still just as confused as before. They arrest the guy and everyone is taken to the station, where Pil-seong is scolded to dress better to look like an actual detective instead of a thug so more mix-ups don't happen, and then Pil-seong is told by Chief Yu to take Seo-jeong home, since they live near one another. As he is driving her home, a foreign car drives near them and Seo-jeong senses extreme bloodthirst from the driver, scaring her immensely.

This is the first person Hwang Dae-du possesses, Seon Yang-woo. This man was a follower of Hwang Dae-du, going so far as to mimic his MO and then going to a powerful shaman, Geum-jo, in the middle of the mountains to resurrect Hwang Dae-du from Hell. Once he is resurrected, the shaman is killed, Hwang Dae-du absorbs her soul and then possesses Seon Yang-woo and absorbs him, too.

Soon enough, Seon-Yang-woo is caught, killed, and Hwang Dae-du just moves on to the next body. It starts to become increasingly difficult to try and catch him to have an exorcism and stop Hwang Dae-du once and for all. Due to him even being on Earth caused a rift and the portal to Hell started opening, soon sending the world to chaos. To stop all this, Seo-jeong steps up and does a ritual to become an official shaman, they're like nuns and can't have romantic relationships and the such, which totally puts a wrench in the romance that was building between her and Pil-seong. Things become complicated between them and more events happen behind the scenes with the Violent Crimes unit members, one even starts dating an officer from the Traffic Crimes unit and gets engaged soon after.

Pil-seong needed so much help stopping Hwang Dae-du that he had Seo-jeong summon Detective Kim Nak-cheon to possess his body, the detective who arrested Hwang Dae-du. So you get to see a couple of episodes where Detective Kim is possessing Pil-seong's body, which is hilarious, no gonna lie. And then things start going down hill from there, but lets be honest, it actually started to get bad when Seo-jeong decided to become a shaman.

(SPOILER WARNING! END)

I am not going to keep explaining the show due to the fact that I don't remember everyone's names and my heart is still raw from what happens. So... this is a little breakdown of the story plots: the A Plot of the show, capturing the murderer and doing police work, becomes entwined with the B Plot of the show. Seo-jeong fits into the show with the B Plot, that being the romance between her and Pil-seong. It doesn't look like it makes sense that she's there until it's revealed that Hwang Dae-du rose back up from the dead and is the one causing all these deaths. Anyways, the first half or so of the show has A and B separate, which, in all honesty, was really nice. It all became a frakkity-frak when the two plots started to merge as one, Seo-jeong becoming a shaman being the catalyst for that. Once they merged, the writers, I guess, needed more lighthearted events happening in the background, this is what B did, so they made a C Plot, which focuses more on on the Violent Crimes unit and Pil-seong's friends.

This show absolutely killed me. It tore out my heart and repeatedly kept ripping it to shreds. I am going to be honest, I genuinely thought there was going to be a happy ending for everyone but I was lied to. This show lied to me and I still love it!

I honestly wish there was an alternative ending to this but there isn't. I want there to be a second season but unfortunately, for the most part, Korean dramas don't do second seasons. I highly recommend this K-Drama so much, it was done very nicely, despite everything going downhill it was realistic-ish. It showed that not everything gets a happy ending, which this did not get. I won't spoil more than that, it was a twist that I genuinely enjoyed. I grew extremely attached to the characters which helped to tear my heart apart more easily, these show writers are merciless, like really. Let me tell you, I cried, violently, and even though I am no longer physically shedding tears, I still am very sad. That's how attached I became to these guys.

Anyways, if you guys want to toe-dip into watching K-Dramas, I really do recommend this for you guys to watch, unless you are sensitive like me and get seriously attached to characters. Your heart will be torn out and and stepped on, and there is no remedy given for it from the show. Thanks for reading! Hope this got you a little interested in watching K-Dramas, maybe. Continue staying safe everyone! Until next time!

PS. Is anyone else who uses Blogger annoyed with the new layout? It's been a few weeks and I finally am just really bothered with it. I can't move and resize my images like I used to do and it is really annoying. And the new label thing is not ideal either, I check off a label in my list, save the post and then it's not labeled, I still have to manually type out the label. But that's not all, you need to type the label, check it off, then go back into the line and scroll all the way to the end of the text box to put a comma if you plan on putting more labels. This is getting increasingly frustrating! I wish the old layout was back. Okay, mini rant over, sorry about that.
